Some of the Hardest Hikes in Lebanon

Highlanders961 organizes some of the hardest hiking challenges in Lebanon—created for hikers who want to move beyond short walks and experience the country’s mountains through distance, elevation, altitude and demanding terrain.

Not every hiking event should be called a challenge.

A short trail does not become difficult because of its name, and a few hundred metres of elevation gain do not automatically make a hike advanced.

At Highlanders961, difficulty is based on the trail itself. We consider its distance, total elevation gain, terrain, altitude, exposure, expected pace and duration before assigning a level.

That is why our hikes sometimes appear harder than events offered by other hiking groups in Lebanon: we publish the real classification instead of lowering it to attract more participants.

Real Mountain Challenges, Not Nature Walks

Lebanon has countless beautiful places for short walks, picnics and relaxed outdoor trips. There is nothing wrong with those activities—but they are not what defines Highlanders961.

Our identity is built around:

  • Long-distance mountain traverses

  • High-altitude hiking

  • Major elevation gain and descent

  • Rocky and exposed terrain

  • Summit challenges

  • Backpacking expeditions

  • Routes connecting different mountain regions

  • Advanced and Xtreme hiking events

We do not add the word “challenging” to make an easy trail sound exciting. When Highlanders961 announces a challenge hike, participants should expect a genuine physical and mental test.

What Makes a Hike Difficult?

Distance is only one part of hiking difficulty.

A 10-kilometre trail with steep climbing, loose rocks and exposed sections can be harder than a longer trail on a flat road. Altitude, weather, backpack weight and pace can dramatically change the effort required.

Before classifying a hike, we examine several factors.

Distance

Long distances require endurance and the ability to maintain energy for several hours. Some Highlanders961 routes extend beyond 20 or 30 kilometres and cannot be completed safely without preparation.

Elevation Gain

Elevation gain measures how much climbing hikers complete during the route. Repeated ascents can be physically exhausting even when the total distance appears moderate.

Terrain

Rocky ridges, loose gravel, steep descents and uneven mountain surfaces demand more strength, balance and concentration than regular walking paths.

Altitude and Exposure

High-altitude routes may involve stronger winds, colder temperatures and rapidly changing weather. Exposed ridgelines also leave hikers with less protection from the sun and wind.

Duration and Pace

A mountain challenge is not defined only by whether someone can eventually finish it. Participants must be able to maintain the group’s pace and complete the route within the available daylight and safety plan.

Highlanders961 X Events

Our most demanding hiking challenges are organized as X Events.

These events are not open bookings where anyone can register without preparation. Participation may require previous hiking experience, proper equipment and approval from the Highlanders961 team.

The message behind X Events is simple:

Earned, not booked.

Approval is not meant to exclude people. It protects the participant and the group. On a difficult mountain traverse, one unprepared hiker can place themselves and everyone around them at risk.

X Events may include:

  • Long-distance traverses

  • High mountain routes

  • Overnight expeditions

  • Sunrise summit attempts

  • Challenging elevation profiles

  • Remote terrain with limited exit points

  • Routes requiring strong endurance and self-reliance

The objective is not to make hiking dangerous. The objective is to undertake serious mountain challenges with the preparation, leadership and discipline they require.

Across Lebanon’s Highest Mountains

Highlanders961 has organized routes across some of Lebanon’s most demanding mountain regions, including:

  • Qornet El Sawda and the northern highlands from Ehden

  • Nassef El Batrak To Laqlouq (passing by The Church Of god, Rahwe Grotto and tannourine mountaintop)

  • Laqlouq and Aaqoura (the howling wolf section from tim rtiba)

  • Faraya, Mzaar Kfardebian, The divine mercy church and sannine real summit (sannine)

  • Zaarour and Knaisse passing by majdal tarchich

  • The Chouf highlands from dahr el baidar

These events include summit hikes, ridge crossings and long traverses connecting mountain areas that are usually explored separately.

Routes such as the 30-kilometre Faraya–Aaqoura traverse, the 27-kilometre Cedars–Laqlouq crossing and other advanced mountain sections represent the kind of progression Highlanders961 wants to build.

The purpose is not to visit a mountain, take photographs and return by the shortest route.

The purpose is to cross it.

Our Hikes Are Not Difficult for Everyone

Calling a trail difficult does not mean that no one can complete it.

An advanced route may feel manageable to an experienced hiker and extremely hard to someone accustomed to short recreational walks. That does not change the trail’s actual classification.

Difficulty should describe the route—not flatter or intimidate the participant.

This is why Highlanders961 publishes clear technical information before every event, including:

  • Distance

  • Elevation gain

  • Estimated duration

  • Terrain

  • Difficulty level

  • Required footwear and equipment

  • Previous experience when necessary

We want hikers to know what they are joining before they reserve.

A Clear Path to Progress

Highlanders961 is not only for advanced hikers.

We also organize accessible hikes that allow participants to build endurance and gain real mountain experience. The difference is that we do not pretend every event is suitable for everyone.

Hikers can begin with easier routes, progress through moderate and challenge events, and eventually become ready for advanced traverses or X Events.

Progress does not happen by repeatedly completing the same easy distance. It happens by gradually increasing the challenge, learning how to manage effort and becoming more capable in demanding terrain.

Our role is to provide that progression without hiding the real difficulty of each trail.

Safety Comes Before Completion

Organizing some of the hardest hikes in Lebanon does not mean taking unnecessary risks.

Difficult hiking requires stronger safety standards—not weaker ones.

Routes are studied before the event, participant readiness is considered and requirements are communicated in advance. During the hike, the group must respect the pace, instructions and decisions of the guides.

Turning back, changing the route or refusing participation to an unprepared hiker is not failure. Continuing when conditions are unsafe is the real failure.

The mountain does not care about marketing, pride or promises.

Why We Choose Harder Routes

Lebanon’s mountains offer much more than short recreational trails.

They contain long ridgelines, remote crossings, high summits and connected landscapes that can only be understood by travelling through them on foot.

We choose harder routes because they reveal a different side of Lebanon and create experiences that require commitment.

The satisfaction does not come only from reaching a viewpoint. It comes from knowing that the distance, climb and terrain demanded something from you—and that you were prepared enough to complete them.
