How Effort Score Maps to Levels

Effort Score Highlanders Level
Less than 100 Level 1 — Foundation
100 – 160 Level 2 — Endurance
161 – 220 Level 3 — Advanced
Above 220 Level 4 — Xtreme

The Effort Score is calculated using equivalent mountain load:
Equivalent Distance = Distance + (Elevation ÷ 100)

This score estimates terrain load only. Weather, terrain roughness, and pace also affect real effort.

How the Model Works

In mountain hiking, vertical gain is the primary stress factor. Research and field experience show that every 100 meters of elevation adds effort comparable to approximately 1 kilometer of flat walking.

This calculator estimates equivalent mountain effort, not subjective difficulty. Your personal conditioning determines how demanding a hike feels.
